Hollywood, 1927: As silent movie star George Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he sparks with Peppy Miller, a young dancer set for a big break.
An out-of-work actor - seems to have a nervous breakdown - and starts destroying his projector and films. Later he sets fire to film. As the fire rages uncontrollably, he comes to his senses and tries to recover a film. The fire overwhelms him and he faints. He is saved when his dog rushes out and gets a policeman to help.
